IBAN Validator & Formatter for International Bank Accounts

Check an IBAN country format, registered length and MOD-97 checksum, then copy a clean print, electronic or masked version without sending the number to a page-specific validation service.

Validate and format IBAN numbers

Country registry checks, national structure validation, streaming MOD-97 and batch export.

Enter an IBAN

Spaces and hyphens are accepted. Other punctuation is reported.

Maximum registered IBAN length is 34 electronic characters.
Enter an IBAN to check its registry format and checksum.
Validation result will appear hereThe tool checks country, length, BBAN structure and MOD-97 independently.

Check an IBAN before using it in a payment workflow

An IBAN checker can catch common data-entry errors before a bank form, invoice, payroll file or accounts-payable system receives the number. This page validates the published country structure and mathematical check digits while keeping the limitations of offline validation clear.

Four independent checks

Country recognition, fixed length, national BBAN pattern and MOD-97 are reported separately so an invalid result has a useful reason.

Business-ready formatting

Copy grouped print format for documents, compact electronic format for data entry, or a masked version for tickets and screenshots.

Batch quality control

Validate newline-separated account identifiers and export a structured result for cleanup, migration or pre-import review.

How to validate and format an IBAN

The visible workflow and structured instructions use the same five steps.

  1. Enter an IBANPaste or type the bank account number with or without spaces. Letters are normalized to uppercase.
  2. Run the validationChoose Validate IBAN to check the country code, registered length, national format and MOD-97 checksum.
  3. Review the resultInspect the validation checklist, country information, check digits, BBAN and checksum remainder.
  4. Copy the required formatCopy the four-character print format, compact electronic format or a masked version for safer display.
  5. Validate a list when neededOpen Batch Validator, place one IBAN on each line and export the results as CSV or TXT.

How IBAN format and checksum validation works

ISO 13616 defines the IBAN structure, while the official registry records each participating country’s fixed format. The checksum uses the MOD-97-10 method.

Country and length

The first two letters select a registry entry. The normalized number must match that country’s exact electronic length.

National BBAN pattern

The characters after the first four positions are checked against the registered numeric, alphabetic and alphanumeric sequence.

MOD-97 remainder

The rearranged and numerically expanded IBAN is processed in small chunks. A compliant checksum leaves a remainder of exactly 1.

IBAN validation for finance, payroll and business data

Invoice preparation

Format account details consistently before placing them in invoices, contracts, payment instructions or supplier records.

Accounts payable review

Screen imported identifiers for obvious structural errors before a separate authorized beneficiary-verification process.

Form development and QA

Use registered examples and invalid variants to test client-side validation, field formatting and error messages.

Data cleanup

Normalize inconsistent spacing and capitalization while preserving the exact electronic characters of each line.

Cross-border payment entry

Reduce simple transcription mistakes before entering details into an online bank or enterprise payment platform.

Support and troubleshooting

Identify whether a rejection is caused by an unknown country, wrong length, national pattern or checksum failure.

Private browser-session IBAN checking

No page-specific validation request

Entered IBAN values are evaluated by code running in the current page. The tool does not submit them to a page-specific bank lookup or validation endpoint.

No bank-directory lookup

Because no external directory is queried, the result cannot confirm the bank, branch, BIC, account status, beneficiary name or ownership.

Temporary page state

Inputs and results remain visible until you clear or leave the page. Downloads are created locally and their temporary references are released.

Treat IBANs as financial data

Use only authorized account details and avoid exposing full IBANs in public posts, screenshots, support tickets or shared analytics.

What a valid IBAN result cannot guarantee

Account existence

A valid structure and checksum do not prove that the account has been issued, remains open or can receive the intended payment.

Recipient identity

The checker cannot match an IBAN to a person or company. Confirm unexpected payment-detail changes through a trusted channel.

Transfer eligibility

Currency, country restrictions, scheme participation, sanctions, account type and bank policies may still block a transfer.

National secondary checks

Some countries use additional domestic account checks that are outside the common IBAN structure and MOD-97 validation performed here.

Live bank information

Bank mergers, branch changes and BIC mappings require current reference services and are not inferred from this static format registry.

Payment authorization

A validated identifier is not permission to initiate a transfer and does not replace your organization’s approval and fraud controls.

IBAN validator frequently asked questions

Answers about IBAN checksums, formatting, SEPA, batch validation, privacy and payment-safety limitations.

What does this IBAN validator check?

It checks the country code, registered country length, country-specific alphanumeric structure and the ISO MOD-97 checksum.

Does a valid checksum prove that the bank account exists?

No. A mathematically valid IBAN can still refer to a closed, inactive, mistyped or nonexistent account. Confirm payment details with the recipient or bank.

Does this tool verify the account holder name?

No. It does not contact a bank and cannot confirm the beneficiary name, account ownership or recipient identity.

Can this tool find the bank or BIC from an IBAN?

No. This browser-only checker validates the registered IBAN structure and checksum but does not query a bank directory or return a BIC.

What is the MOD-97 IBAN check?

The first four characters are moved to the end, letters are converted to numbers from A equals 10 through Z equals 35, and the resulting number must leave a remainder of 1 when divided by 97.

What is the difference between print and electronic IBAN format?

The print format separates characters into groups of four for readability. The electronic format contains the same characters without spaces.

Can I paste an IBAN that contains spaces or hyphens?

Yes. Spaces and hyphens are removed before validation. Other punctuation is rejected so accidental characters are not silently ignored.

Why is my IBAN the wrong length?

Each participating country has a fixed registered IBAN length. A missing or extra character causes the country-length check to fail.

Why can the country and length be correct but the IBAN still fail?

The national BBAN pattern or MOD-97 check digits may be wrong even when the country prefix and overall length look correct.

What are the first four IBAN characters?

The first two letters are the country code and the next two characters are numeric check digits. The remaining characters form the country-specific BBAN.

What is a BBAN?

BBAN means Basic Bank Account Number. It is the country-specific part after the two-letter country code and two check digits.

How long can an IBAN be?

An IBAN can contain up to 34 alphanumeric characters, but each registered country uses one specific fixed length.

Are all European countries part of IBAN?

Many European countries use IBAN, but the registry also includes countries outside Europe. Not every country in the world uses the standard.

Is every IBAN country in SEPA?

No. IBAN and SEPA are different concepts. Some registered IBAN countries are not SEPA participants.

Does SEPA status guarantee that a transfer is supported?

No. The displayed registry status is informational. Currency, payment scheme, bank participation, account type and transfer rules can still affect eligibility.

Can I validate several IBANs at once?

Yes. The Batch Validator accepts one IBAN per line and reports valid and invalid entries with the reason for each result.

Can I download batch validation results?

Yes. Export the current batch results as CSV or TXT using filenames beginning with correctioncopy.com_.

Does batch validation remove duplicate IBANs?

No. Every nonempty line is checked independently so the exported result preserves the original line order.

Can I use lowercase letters?

Yes. Lowercase Latin letters are converted to uppercase before validation and formatting.

Can an IBAN contain non-Latin letters?

No. The registered electronic format uses the Latin letters A to Z and digits 0 to 9.

Can I use the validator for a card number?

No. An IBAN identifies a bank account format and is not a debit or credit card number.

Is an IBAN the same as a SWIFT or BIC code?

No. An IBAN identifies an account in a standardized country format, while a BIC identifies a financial institution or branch.

Does the tool send my IBAN to a server?

The page-specific validator processes entered values in the current browser session and does not submit them to a page-specific validation endpoint.

Is it safe to publish an IBAN?

An IBAN is financial account information. Share it only with intended parties and avoid placing it in public screenshots, posts or documents unnecessarily.

Can the tool correct an invalid IBAN automatically?

No. It explains which validation stage failed but does not guess missing characters or generate replacement account details.

Where do the country lengths and examples come from?

The embedded country data is based on the official ISO 13616 IBAN Registry, release 102 from June 2026.

Why might another service give a different result?

A service may use older registry data, apply additional national checks or query commercial bank directories. This tool checks the published country format and MOD-97 checksum.

Can a valid IBAN still be rejected by a payment form?

Yes. A bank or merchant may reject an otherwise valid IBAN because of account restrictions, unsupported countries, payment-scheme rules or separate beneficiary checks.

Does the validator work on mobile devices?

Yes. The interface supports touch input, responsive formatting, batch validation and downloads in current mobile browsers.

How do I start over?

Use Reset Tool to clear the single result, batch entries, filters and generated downloads from the current page state.
