Which barcode format should I use?

Every format is designed for a specific industry or purpose.

Most popular

Code 128

Encodes all 128 ASCII characters. Ideal for shipping labels, inventory systems, serial numbers and general-purpose tracking.

Retail global

EAN-13

13-digit international retail standard. Used on virtually every product sold outside North America. Requires exactly 12 digits (check digit auto-calculated).

Retail US/CA

UPC-A

12-digit standard for retail products in the United States and Canada. Universally supported by point-of-sale systems.

Small pack

EAN-8

Compact 8-digit variant of EAN for small product packaging where an EAN-13 does not fit. Requires 7 digits.

Industrial

Code 39

Alphanumeric barcode widely used in automotive, defence and asset-tagging. Supports A–Z, 0–9 and a few symbols.

Logistics

ITF-14

Used on cartons and pallets in warehouse and distribution. Encodes a 14-digit GTIN including a check digit.

Warehouse

MSI / Plessey

Numeric-only code used in retail shelving, library systems and warehouse inventory. Simple and reliable for numeric data.

Pharma

Pharmacode

Binary barcode used in pharmaceutical packaging. Encodes a numeric product code for high-speed sorting on packaging lines.

Barcode Generator — frequently asked questions

A barcode generator is an online tool that converts text or numeric data into a scannable barcode image. Enter your data, choose a format such as Code 128 or EAN-13, customise the appearance, then download the result as PNG or SVG for use on labels, packaging or documents.

For general inventory, shipping and asset tracking use Code 128 — it encodes any text or numbers. For retail products sold globally use EAN-13. For US and Canadian retail use UPC-A. For warehouse logistics and outer cartons use ITF-14. For industrial and automotive asset tags use Code 39. For pharmaceutical packaging use Pharmacode.

Yes, completely free. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of barcodes you can generate or download. The tool uses the open-source JsBarcode library and runs entirely in your browser.

Yes. The tool generates barcodes according to each format's official specification, including automatic check-digit calculation for EAN and UPC codes. Download as SVG for print at any resolution, or PNG for use in documents. For best scan reliability, maintain black bars on a white background and ensure the barcode is at least 25mm wide when printed.

SVG is a vector format that stays perfectly sharp at any size, making it ideal for professional print, packaging and design software. PNG is a pixel-based image best suited for use in Word documents, email, presentations and quick label printing. If you are unsure, SVG is the safer choice for print.

Completely private. All barcode generation happens inside your own browser. Your product codes, serial numbers or any other data you enter are never sent to CorrectionCopy servers or any third party.

EAN-13 is a 13-digit barcode. The 13th digit is a check digit calculated automatically by the tool from your first 12 digits. You supply the 12 data digits and the generator calculates and appends the correct check digit according to the GS1 specification, producing a valid, scannable 13-digit barcode.

Yes. Use the colour pickers to change both the bar colour and the background colour. For best scanning reliability, always keep high contrast between bars and background. Most barcode scanners use a red laser, so avoid red bars. Black on white is always the safest and most widely supported combination.
