Reduce the image to a character grid

The selected column count defines the horizontal text resolution. The row count is calculated from the image ratio and character aspect correction so the result remains recognizable in monospaced text.

Measure brightness and transparency

Each grid cell receives a sampled colour, brightness and transparency value. Transparent pixels can become spaces or use the chosen sampling background.

Map tone to visual density

Dark sampled areas receive dense characters near the beginning of the selected sequence, while bright areas receive lighter characters near the end.

Render text without losing the plain output

What does the Columns control change?

Columns sets the number of characters across the output. More columns preserve finer detail but produce wider text, larger exports and more processing work.

What is a character-density set?

It is an ordered sequence from visually dark characters to visually light characters. The generator maps sampled brightness values to positions in that sequence.

Can I use my own ASCII characters?

Yes. Choose Custom Characters and enter an ordered sequence. Repeated characters are removed while preserving the first occurrence of each character.

Does the order of custom characters matter?

Yes. Enter the darkest or most visually filled character first and the lightest character, often a space or period, last.

What does Invert Brightness do?

It reverses the mapping so bright areas use dense characters and dark areas use light characters. This is useful for light text on a dark terminal background.

What is ordered dithering?

Ordered dithering applies a small repeating threshold pattern before character selection. It can preserve texture and gradients using a limited character set.

What is error-diffusion dithering?

Error-diffusion dithering passes part of each brightness rounding error to nearby cells. It can create smoother tonal transitions but may add a grain-like pattern.

What does Edge Emphasis do?

It darkens areas with strong local brightness changes so outlines and important boundaries can remain visible after the image is reduced to characters.

What is the difference between Cover, Contain and Stretch?

Cover fills the complete character grid and may crop image edges. Contain keeps the entire image and may add empty space. Stretch fills the grid but can distort the image.

Can I create coloured ASCII art?

Yes. The rendered preview, PNG and HTML export can use one solid colour, grayscale, sampled source colours or a two-colour gradient. Plain TXT output contains characters only.

Is coloured ASCII still plain text?

The characters remain text in the HTML output, but colour styling is separate from the plain character content. A TXT file cannot preserve per-character colours.

Can I copy the ASCII art into Discord, Reddit or a code editor?

Yes. Copy the plain text and paste it inside a code block or a monospaced text area. Proportions may change if the destination does not use a monospaced font or preserves spaces differently.

Can I download the result as a text file?

Can the PNG background be transparent?

Why is the downloaded PNG very large?

A high column count, large font, wide character spacing, generous padding or two-times and three-times resolution increases the output dimensions and memory requirement.

Does this tool upload my image?

No page-specific upload or conversion endpoint receives the selected image. Decoding, sampling, character generation and export occur in the current browser session.

Does the tool store my image or ASCII output?

No. Image data and generated ASCII text are not stored by the tool. Only non-content preferences such as dimensions, character preset and export style may be remembered.

Does the generated output keep photo metadata?

TXT and HTML do not contain the original camera metadata. PNG output is newly rendered and normally excludes original location and camera metadata.

Does the ASCII generator work on phones and tablets?

Yes in current mobile browsers that support local file selection and image decoding. Very large images or very wide character grids can use substantial memory on lower-end devices.
