The selected column count defines the horizontal text resolution. The row count is calculated from the image ratio and character aspect correction so the result remains recognizable in monospaced text.
Each grid cell receives a sampled colour, brightness and transparency value. Transparent pixels can become spaces or use the chosen sampling background.
Dark sampled areas receive dense characters near the beginning of the selected sequence, while bright areas receive lighter characters near the end.
The same character grid drives the copyable text and the styled preview, allowing PNG and HTML to add colour without changing the underlying ASCII rows.

Columns sets the number of characters across the output. More columns preserve finer detail but produce wider text, larger exports and more processing work.
It is an ordered sequence from visually dark characters to visually light characters. The generator maps sampled brightness values to positions in that sequence.
Yes. Choose Custom Characters and enter an ordered sequence. Repeated characters are removed while preserving the first occurrence of each character.
Yes. Enter the darkest or most visually filled character first and the lightest character, often a space or period, last.
It reverses the mapping so bright areas use dense characters and dark areas use light characters. This is useful for light text on a dark terminal background.
Ordered dithering applies a small repeating threshold pattern before character selection. It can preserve texture and gradients using a limited character set.
Error-diffusion dithering passes part of each brightness rounding error to nearby cells. It can create smoother tonal transitions but may add a grain-like pattern.
It darkens areas with strong local brightness changes so outlines and important boundaries can remain visible after the image is reduced to characters.
Cover fills the complete character grid and may crop image edges. Contain keeps the entire image and may add empty space. Stretch fills the grid but can distort the image.
Yes. The rendered preview, PNG and HTML export can use one solid colour, grayscale, sampled source colours or a two-colour gradient. Plain TXT output contains characters only.
The characters remain text in the HTML output, but colour styling is separate from the plain character content. A TXT file cannot preserve per-character colours.
