Keyboard ghosting and rollover test

Check simultaneous keys

Start capture and hold a deliberate combination. Every browser-reported key appears in the held-key list, while Maximum simultaneous records the largest group seen during the session. A missing expected key can indicate a matrix, firmware, connection or shortcut limitation.

Interpret the result carefully

One successful combination does not prove full N-key rollover. Test combinations relevant to your games or shortcuts, including keys from the same keyboard region. Avoid operating-system commands that could close, lock or switch applications.

Keydown visualizer, key values and physical codes

Physical key position

The visualizer primarily matches KeyboardEvent.code, which identifies a physical position such as KeyQ, ShiftLeft or Numpad1. The W3C maintains the standardized code-value list. Read the keyboard code specification.

Interpreted key value

The latest-event inspector also shows KeyboardEvent.key. That value can change with the active language layout, Shift state, Caps Lock and other modifiers. Held keys can generate repeat keydown events marked by the browser. Review keyboard key behavior.

Laptop and compact layouts

Select Compact main keys or Tenkeyless to reduce visual clutter. Laptop Fn combinations often change brightness, volume or hardware state without sending a separate Fn event, so the browser may only receive the resulting action—or nothing.

Mechanical and gaming boards

Use the tested outline to check switch registration after a build, cleaning or switch replacement. Use combination history for game-control clusters. This page does not measure switch force, debounce electrically, USB polling rate or end-to-end input latency.

How to use the online keyboard tester

Press Start Keyboard Test. The page begins listening for physical keyboard keydown and keyup events until you stop or press Escape.

Tap each physical key once. The matching visual key receives a tested outline, while keys currently held down receive a stronger active outline.

Keyboard troubleshooting and limitations

A key does not highlight

Confirm that capture is active and the page has focus. Try the key without a browser shortcut combination, reconnect the keyboard and test another browser or device. If the code is valid but not drawn, it should appear in Extra detected keys.

Reserved and special keys

Webpages cannot guarantee control over browser, operating-system or firmware-reserved keys. Function-layer keys, power controls, biometric keys and some media controls may never generate a normal event. The browser’s keydown documentation explains how event targets and composition can vary. Focus changed during testing

When the tab is hidden or the window loses focus, keyup can be missed. The tester clears active highlights on blur and visibility changes. Restart the combination after returning to the page.

Privacy and local processing

The page-specific engine processes keyboard events in the current browser and does not submit captured keys or reports. No account, file upload, page-specific analytics event, permanent key log or server processing is added by this tool.

What is an online keyboard test?

An online keyboard test listens for browser keyboard events and highlights the corresponding keys on a visual layout. It helps confirm that a physical key press reaches the browser.

How do I start the keyboard tester?

Choose a layout, press Start Keyboard Test and then press keys on your physical keyboard. Press Escape or the Stop button when you are finished.

What do the active and tested key states mean?

Active means the browser currently considers the key held down. Tested means at least one distinct keydown was received for that physical key during the current session.

Can this test detect every key on my keyboard?

It can detect keys that generate browser keyboard events. Some function-layer, firmware, media, biometric, brightness and operating-system-reserved keys may not reach a webpage.

What is the difference between key and code?

The key value describes the interpreted key value, such as a character or named action. The code value identifies the physical key position, such as KeyQ or Numpad1, independently of the active language layout.

Why does a letter key show a different character?

The reported key value follows the active operating-system keyboard layout and modifier state. The physical code can remain the same even when the produced character changes.

Does the tester support ANSI and ISO keyboards?

The visualizer covers common full-size PC positions and records any additional browser-reported code. ISO-specific keys such as IntlBackslash can appear in the detected-extra-keys area when they are not present in the selected drawing.

Can I test a laptop keyboard?

Yes. Choose the compact or tenkeyless view if it better matches the laptop. Function-layer actions controlled through an Fn key may remain outside browser detection.

Can I test a mechanical or gaming keyboard?

Yes. You can verify individual switches, repeated presses and simultaneous combinations. The browser result does not replace firmware, electrical or latency testing equipment.

Can I test a wireless or Bluetooth keyboard?

Yes, provided the operating system has connected the keyboard and the browser receives its key events. Connection drops or power-saving behavior can still affect the device outside the webpage.

What is keyboard ghosting?

Ghosting commonly refers to a combination where an expected key is not reported or an unintended key appears. Hold several keys together and compare the active-key list with the keys you are physically pressing.

What is keyboard rollover?

Rollover describes how many simultaneous key presses a keyboard can report correctly. The maximum concurrent value shown here is the greatest number of browser-reported keys held together during this session.

Does a high rollover result prove NKRO?

No. A browser session tests only the combinations you press and can be influenced by the operating system, connection and browser. It does not certify every possible key combination.

Why are held keys not counted repeatedly?

The tester separates the initial keydown from auto-repeat events. Repeated events are counted in a separate metric so one held key does not look like many distinct presses.

What does the repeat property mean?

Repeat becomes true when the browser reports additional keydown events because a key is being held. Repeat timing is controlled by the operating system and keyboard settings.

Can I test left and right Shift, Ctrl and Alt separately?

Yes. The visualizer uses physical code and location information to distinguish common left, right, standard and numeric-keypad positions when the browser provides them.

Can I test the Windows or Command key?

The key may highlight when the browser receives it, but operating-system shortcuts can take priority. Avoid combinations that close, switch or lock applications.

Can I test function keys such as F1 through F12?

Usually, but browsers or operating systems can reserve actions such as Help, refresh, brightness or media control. A reserved action may occur before the page can record or cancel it.

Can I test the Fn key?

Usually not. Fn is commonly processed inside keyboard hardware or firmware and often does not generate a standard browser keyboard event.

Can I test media and brightness keys?

Some media keys generate browser-visible named events, while others are handled directly by the operating system or device firmware. Unmapped events are shown as extra detected keys when possible.

Why does pressing Tab move focus?

Safe capture mode preserves important browser accessibility behavior. Full capture attempts to prevent more default actions, but reserved browser or operating-system shortcuts can still win.

What is safe capture mode?

Safe capture prevents common page movement from Space, arrows, Page Up, Page Down, Home, End and Backspace while leaving many browser shortcuts and focus behaviors available.

What is full capture mode?

Full capture calls preventDefault for most keydown events while the test is active. It still cannot guarantee control over browser-reserved or operating-system-reserved shortcuts. Escape always stops the test.

Why did active keys remain highlighted after switching windows?

A webpage can miss keyup when focus changes. This tool clears held-key states when the page loses visibility or focus and displays a warning so stale highlights do not remain.

Can I use this on a phone or tablet?

The page layout works on mobile, but most on-screen keyboards do not expose physical key positions in the same way. A connected hardware keyboard provides more useful results.

Does the tool measure keyboard latency?

No. Event timestamps describe when the browser received events, but they do not isolate switch scan rate, USB polling, wireless delay, display delay or operating-system scheduling.

Can the test repair a broken key?

No. It can help confirm whether the browser receives a key. Cleaning, remapping, firmware updates, switch replacement or professional repair may be needed for a hardware problem.

Can I download my keyboard test?

Yes. Download a text report containing the tested and untested keys, metrics and recent combinations, plus a CSV file containing the captured event history.

Are my keystrokes uploaded?

No page-specific request sends the captured keys or event history to a server. The keyboard test state remains in the current browser page and is cleared when you reset or leave.

Does the tester record passwords typed elsewhere?

No. It listens only while this page is open and the test is active. Do not type passwords or sensitive text into any keyboard testing page.

Do I need an account or installation?

No. A current browser with JavaScript enabled is sufficient. No extension, account, file upload or browser permission prompt is required.

Which browsers are supported?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari versions support the keyboard events used here. Exact behavior for special keys and reserved shortcuts varies by browser, operating system and device.
