Online Ruler in Actual Size for CM, MM & Inches

Calibrate your screen, display a real-size digital ruler, drag measurement guides and measure small objects in centimetres, millimetres or inches without installing an app.

Calibrate before relying on physical size. Browsers can report CSS pixels and device-pixel ratio, but they cannot reliably determine every display's physical dimensions. Keep browser zoom unchanged after calibration and verify important measurements with a physical ruler.

Calibrated actual-size screen ruler

Configure the display scale, ruler units and draggable measurement guides.

Ruler setup

Select the physical ruler direction, scale and subdivisions.

Screen calibration

Reference-object calibration is the most direct method when the object length is trustworthy.

Resize the bar until it matches the real object from edge to edge.
85.60 mm reference

Use the display's native hardware resolution, not merely the browser viewport. Browser zoom and system scaling can still require physical verification.

This is CSS layout pixels per physical inch, not necessarily the display's native hardware PPI.

The CSS baseline uses 96 CSS pixels per inch. It is useful as a starting point but is not considered physically calibrated.

Optional browser storage contains only the calibration value, method, device-pixel ratio and save time.

Measurement guides

Drag the orange guides on the ruler or enter exact start and end positions.

Actual-size online ruler and screen calibration

Why an online ruler needs calibration

Web layouts use CSS pixels. A CSS inch is defined as 96 CSS pixels, but the physical size of that inch can differ because of display density, system scaling, browser zoom and viewing conditions. Calibration maps the current CSS layout to a known physical length.

What the DPI and PPI values mean

The tool works with CSS pixels per physical inch. Native display PPI, device-pixel ratio and CSS pixels are related but are not interchangeable. A reference object remains the clearest practical check for an actual-size screen ruler.

Ruler modes for centimetres, millimetres and inches

Online ruler in centimetres

Display centimetre numbers with millimetre subdivisions for small objects, paper edges, craft materials and everyday length checks.

Millimetre ruler

Use millimetre labels and one-millimetre ticks when you need a compact metric scale and fine guide positioning.

Online ruler in inches

Display inches divided into eighths or sixteenths, with calibrated spacing and draggable start and end markers.

Screen ruler for phone and desktop

Use horizontal, vertical or dual orientation, fullscreen focus and internal scrolling without shrinking the calibrated ruler.

Combined CM and inch ruler

Compare metric and imperial markings on the same calibrated surface without converting values manually.

Printable vector ruler

Export the current scale as a vector file with physical dimensions, then print at 100 percent and verify the result before use.

How to use the online ruler

1

Choose a calibration method

Use a standard payment card, enter known screen specifications, provide a manual CSS pixels-per-inch value, or continue with the uncalibrated 96 CSS-pixel baseline.

2

Calibrate the ruler

For reference-object calibration, resize the orange-ended calibration bar until it matches the real object, then apply the measurement. Keep browser zoom unchanged after calibration.

3

Configure the ruler

Choose horizontal, vertical or dual orientation, select centimetres, millimetres, inches or combined units, and enter the ruler length you need.

4

Measure with guides

Place the object against the ruler, drag the start and end guides or enter their positions, and read the distance in millimetres, centimetres and inches.

5

Use fullscreen or export

Open the ruler in fullscreen for more working space, download a vector ruler or calibration report, print at 100 percent scale, or reset and calibrate another display.

Accuracy, privacy and browser behaviour

Accuracy considerations

Use a flat, undamaged reference object with a verified dimension. Align it directly against the screen without perspective error. Recheck calibration after changing zoom, orientation, browser, operating-system scaling or display. This tool is suitable for convenient approximate measurement, not certified metrology, manufacturing tolerances or safety-critical work.

Local browser processing

No page-specific request sends calibration values, object lengths or guide positions to a server. Optional remembered calibration is stored only in this browser when selected. Generated text and vector files are created locally without uploading measurement data.

Technical references

CSS absolute length units

The CSS specification defines the fixed relationship between absolute units, including 1 inch = 96 CSS pixels and 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres. Read the W3C specification.

Device-pixel ratio

Device-pixel ratio describes the relationship between device pixels and CSS pixels. It does not independently provide the display's physical dimensions. Read the browser documentation.

Troubleshooting an inaccurate screen ruler

The card does not match the calibration bar

Confirm you selected the card's long 85.60 mm edge. Keep the object flat against the screen, use the range control or one-pixel nudge buttons, and apply the calibration only after both endpoints align.

The ruler changed after zooming

Return to the original browser zoom or recalibrate. The page warns when the reported device-pixel ratio changes after calibration because the physical size may no longer match.

The ruler is wider than the screen

Scroll inside the ruler surface or use Fit Length to Viewport. The tool does not shrink a calibrated ruler to fit because shrinking would destroy the actual-size scale.

Fullscreen is unavailable

Try again from the Fullscreen button. When the browser rejects the request, the preview expands into a full-window focus mode that can be closed with Escape.

Frequently asked questions

What is an online ruler?

An online ruler displays measurement marks on a screen so you can compare a small physical object with centimetres, millimetres or inches. Physical accuracy depends on correct screen calibration.

Can this ruler display actual size?

Yes, after calibration. A browser cannot reliably determine the physical size of every screen, so the ruler must be matched to a known object, calculated from trusted display specifications or configured with a known CSS pixels-per-inch value.

Why is calibration necessary?

CSS pixels, operating-system scaling, browser zoom and display density vary. Calibration establishes how many CSS pixels on the current screen correspond to one physical inch.

Can the browser automatically detect my real screen DPI or PPI?

Not reliably. The browser can report CSS screen dimensions and device-pixel ratio, but those values do not by themselves reveal the display's physical width, height or true pixel density.

What does device pixel ratio mean?

Device pixel ratio describes how many device pixels are used for one CSS pixel. It helps render sharp graphics but is not a complete measurement of the screen's physical PPI.

How do I calibrate with a payment card?

Choose the standard payment or ID card reference, place the card against the calibration bar, resize the bar until its endpoints match the card's 85.60 mm width, and press Apply Reference Calibration.

Can I calibrate with another known object?

Yes. Choose Custom known length, enter the object's verified length in millimetres, resize the bar to match it and apply the calibration.

How does screen-specification calibration work?

Enter the display diagonal in inches and its native horizontal and vertical pixel resolution. The tool calculates physical PPI and divides it by the entered device-pixel ratio to estimate the required CSS pixels per inch.

What is manual CSS pixels per inch?

It is the number of CSS layout pixels that should occupy one physical inch on the current display at the current browser zoom. Use it when you already know a tested calibration value.

Why does the baseline use 96 pixels per inch?

CSS defines one inch as 96 CSS pixels for layout calculations. On many screens that CSS inch is not exactly one physical inch, so the baseline is clearly marked uncalibrated.

Does browser zoom affect accuracy?

Yes. Changing browser zoom can change the physical size of CSS pixels. Keep zoom unchanged after calibration or recalibrate when the device-pixel ratio warning appears.

Do I need to recalibrate after moving the window to another monitor?

Usually yes. Different monitors can have different physical pixel density and operating-system scaling, even when their reported resolutions look similar.

Can I use the ruler on a phone?

Yes. Calibrate the phone in its normal orientation and browser zoom, then use the horizontal or vertical ruler. Fullscreen availability and browser controls vary by mobile browser.

Can I use the ruler on a tablet?

Yes. Tablets often provide a larger measuring surface, but they still require calibration because CSS and device pixels do not directly reveal physical screen dimensions.

Which units are supported?

The ruler supports combined centimetre and inch marks, centimetres with millimetre subdivisions, millimetre labels, and inches divided into eighths or sixteenths.

Can I make a vertical ruler?

Yes. Choose Vertical ruler. The same calibrated physical scale is drawn from top to bottom.

What is dual ruler mode?

Dual mode draws horizontal and vertical calibrated scales in one square workspace so you can compare width and height directions. Very long dual rulers may require scrolling.

How do the measurement guides work?

The orange start and end guides mark two positions on the scale. Drag either guide on the ruler or enter positions in millimetres, centimetres or inches to calculate the distance between them.

Can the guides snap to ruler marks?

Yes. Choose free movement, one-millimetre, five-millimetre or one-sixteenth-inch snapping.

How accurate is an online ruler?

Accuracy is limited by calibration quality, object alignment, screen flatness, browser zoom, display scaling and the precision of the reference object. Verify important measurements with a physical measuring instrument.

Should I compare the result with a physical ruler?

Yes. After calibration, compare several known lengths across the screen. Recalibrate if the error grows or if the browser, zoom level, display or orientation changes.

Can I use fullscreen mode?

Yes when the browser permits it. Fullscreen requires a direct user action and can be denied. The tool uses a full-window focus mode when a fullscreen request is unavailable or rejected.

Why does fullscreen not work on my device?

The browser or embedded page may restrict fullscreen, or the request may not follow a direct user action. Focus mode remains available as a fallback.

What is the difference between PPI and DPI?

PPI usually describes display pixels per inch, while DPI traditionally describes printed dots per inch. Online ruler calibration concerns how CSS pixels map to physical inches on a display.

Can I measure an object longer than the visible screen?

The ruler keeps its calibrated scale rather than shrinking to fit. Longer rulers use an internal scrolling measurement surface, so you can inspect sections without changing the physical scale.

Why is there a scrollbar inside the ruler area?

A real-size ruler can be wider or taller than the available viewport. The internal scrollbar prevents page overflow while preserving the calibrated physical size.

What does Fit Length to Viewport do?

It changes the selected ruler length to approximately fill the visible ruler area. It does not stretch or compress the calibrated scale.

Can I download the ruler?

Yes. The tool can generate a vector ruler using the current orientation, length, units and guide positions, plus a text calibration report.

Will the downloaded ruler print at actual size?

It can contain physical width and height units, but print dialogs may scale pages. Print at 100 percent or Actual Size, disable Fit to Page and verify the output against a physical ruler.

Is my calibration information uploaded?

No page-specific request sends ruler settings, guide positions or calibration values to a server. The calculations and generated files remain in the current browser page.

Can the tool remember my calibration?

Only when you select Remember calibration on this device. That optional setting stores the calibration value in this browser. Clear Stored Calibration removes it.

What should I do when the ruler looks wrong?

Return browser zoom to the level used during calibration, confirm the window is on the same display, check the selected reference length, recalibrate and compare the result with more than one known physical length.
