Correct Lunar New Year boundary
A zodiac animal is not always determined by the Gregorian birth year. For births before Lunar New Year, this calculator assigns the preceding Chinese calendar year and shows the exact boundary used.
Enter an exact birth date to identify the correct zodiac year around Lunar New Year, then compare international age, traditional Korean age, Korean year age and East Asian lunar age.
Embedded Chinese New Year boundaries cover the complete 1901–2100 input range.

The 10 heavenly stems pair Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water with alternating yang and yin qualities. The stem combines with one of 12 earthly branches to form a 60-year cycle.
The result separates completed international age, traditional Korean counting age and Korean year age instead of presenting one ambiguous number.
Lunar age starts at one and increases when the Chinese calendar year changes. It can differ from traditional Korean age between January 1 and Lunar New Year.

South Korea’s broad legal and social standard changed to international full age on 28 June 2023. A specific law, policy or programme can still define an age rule separately.
The page-specific engine processes dates locally and does not create a server-side age history. Shared site analytics may load, but entered dates are not intentionally sent to them.
Zodiac signs, elements and age traditions are presented for calendar, cultural and educational use. They do not determine personality, compatibility, health, fortune or future events.
The Hong Kong Observatory uses the first day of the first Chinese calendar month as the start of the Chinese calendar year and the changeover of the stem-branch year.
The Observatory publishes conversion tables for 1901 through 2100 and notes specific long-range astronomical uncertainties near midnight.
The Republic of Korea explains that the international full-age counting system took broad effect on 28 June 2023.
Official eligibility can depend on a statute or programme-specific definition. Verify the governing rule rather than relying only on a general age label.
It uses a birth date and an as-of date to calculate the Chinese zodiac year, animal, element, yin or yang quality, stem-branch name, international age, traditional Korean age, Korean year age and lunar age.
The Chinese calendar year normally changes on Lunar New Year rather than on January 1. A person born in January or early February can therefore belong to the previous zodiac year.
The recommended option uses Chinese New Year dates from the embedded 1900–2101 boundary table. A simplified January 1 option is also available for quick year-only references.
No. The main calculation follows the first day of the first Chinese calendar month, which is the calendar-year boundary used by the Hong Kong Observatory. Some astrology traditions use Li Chun, so their result can differ.
Birth and as-of dates are supported from January 1, 1901 through December 31, 2100. The extra 1900 and 2101 boundaries are embedded to resolve zodiac-year start and end dates at the edges.
Traditional Korean counting age starts at one at birth and increases for everyone on January 1. The calculator shows this cultural method separately from legal international age.
No. South Korea adopted the international full-age system broadly for legal and social use on June 28, 2023. Some specific statutes can still define age differently, so the governing rule should be checked.
Korean year age is the as-of Gregorian year minus the birth year. It is different from traditional counting age and from international age.
Lunar age, also called East Asian nominal age in some contexts, starts at one and increases at Chinese New Year. This calculator derives it from the birth and as-of Chinese calendar years.
Yes. Traditional Korean age increases on January 1, while lunar age increases at Chinese New Year, which usually falls later in January or in February.
International age counts completed birthdays. The detailed result also shows full years, months and days between the birth date and the selected as-of date.
For completed-year and next-birthday calculations, a February 29 birthday is clamped to the last valid day of February in a non-leap year.
The cycle is Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig, repeating every 12 Chinese calendar years.
The five elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. Each is associated with two consecutive heavenly stems, one yang and one yin.
A year combines one of 10 heavenly stems with one of 12 earthly branches. The pair repeats through a 60-year cycle, such as Jia-Chen for 2024.
The animal repeats every 12 years, while the complete stem-branch combination repeats every 60 years.
Yes. The dynamic year table shows each Chinese year, Lunar New Year start date, end date, zodiac animal, element, polarity and stem-branch name.
Yes. Choose a start year and display 12, 24 or 36 consecutive zodiac years within the supported range.

Yes. You can copy the report or use the browser print dialog to print it or save it as a PDF.
When the browser provides Chinese-calendar date formatting, the result includes a localized lunar date for the birth and as-of dates. Core zodiac and age calculations do not depend on that optional display.
The other site may switch the year on January 1, Li Chun or a different local calendar date. Check the boundary method and the exact birth date.
Yes. English translations vary by region and tradition. This page uses Goat while noting the Sheep or Ram translation in the zodiac reference section.
No. The sign descriptions are brief cultural summaries, not scientific assessments, medical advice or predictions.
Use the international-age result as a calculation aid, but verify official eligibility against the law, policy, contract or authority governing the decision.
No page-specific request sends the entered birth date or as-of date to a server. The calculations and exports are generated in the browser, and Reset clears the current workspace.
No account or installation is required. JavaScript must be enabled for the calculator and downloads.
Yes. The interface is responsive, the result stacks below the controls on smaller screens, and all controls are touch-friendly.
Core calculations work in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. Optional localized Chinese-lunar date wording depends on the calendar data included with the browser.
The as-of date cannot be earlier than the birth date and both dates must fall inside the supported 1901–2100 range.
Yes. Set the as-of date to any supported date on or after the birth date to calculate historical international, Korean and lunar ages.
Confirm the exact birth date, the selected as-of date and the zodiac boundary method. For dates near Lunar New Year, compare the displayed Chinese New Year boundary before using the result.
