One tax engine for international price calculations

This calculator handles the core arithmetic shared by VAT, GST and retail sales tax systems: adding tax to a net amount and extracting included tax from a gross amount. The selected profile controls the default rate, currency and component presentation, while custom-rate and local-rate fields keep the engine useful when a jurisdiction has a different combined rate.

Important differences between VAT, GST and sales tax

VAT and GST are generally value-added systems collected through stages of the supply chain, while U.S. sales tax is generally imposed at retail and often varies by state and local jurisdiction. The arithmetic can look similar, but legal taxability, credits, exemptions, sourcing and reporting are not interchangeable.

How to use the VAT / GST / sales tax calculator

1

Choose a tax profile

Select a country, Canadian province or U.S. state profile, then choose the applicable preset rate or enter a custom rate.

2

Choose add or remove tax

Use Add tax for a tax-exclusive amount or Remove included tax when the entered amount already contains VAT, GST or sales tax.

3

Enter transaction details

Enter the amount, quantity, discount and optional shipping, then choose whether shipping is taxable.

4

Calculate and review components

Review the net amount, tax components, effective rate and final total. India, Canadian split-tax and U.S. local-rate profiles show component details.

5

Create invoice items or export

Use the invoice tab for multiple tax-exclusive line items, then copy, print or download the TXT report and CSV line-item schedule.

Accuracy, privacy and practical limitations

  • Preset rates were reviewed on 25 July 2026 and can become outdated after legislation or temporary measures change.
  • The engine does not identify whether a product or service is taxable, zero-rated, exempt, outside scope or eligible for a rebate.
  • U.S. state presets do not automatically determine city, county, district or address-based rates.
  • Canada split-tax presets assume the listed components apply to the same taxable base.
  • India GST presentation does not determine intra-state versus interstate place of supply.
  • All page-specific arithmetic and exports run in the browser. No entered amounts or invoice descriptions are sent to a tool-specific server endpoint.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this VAT and GST calculator do?

It adds tax to a tax-exclusive amount, removes tax from a tax-inclusive amount, separates tax components, calculates invoice line items and provides reference presets for selected countries, Canadian provinces and U.S. states.

Can I remove VAT or GST from a total price?

Yes. Choose Remove included tax. The calculator divides the taxable gross amount by one plus the combined tax rate, then displays the net amount and extracted tax.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Choose Add tax, enter the tax-exclusive amount and select or enter the applicable rate. The tax is the taxable net amount multiplied by the rate.

Can I use a custom tax rate?

Yes. Enable the custom-rate field or select a profile option that allows local tax. Rates from 0% to 100% are accepted for arithmetic flexibility.

Are the preset tax rates guaranteed to be current?

No. Presets were reviewed on the date shown on the page, but tax rates, temporary measures and classification rules can change. Verify the current official source before invoicing or filing.

Does the calculator decide whether an item is taxable?

No. It performs arithmetic only. Exemptions, zero-rating, place-of-supply rules, tax holidays, product categories and registration status require legal and official guidance.

What is the difference between tax-exclusive and tax-inclusive prices?

A tax-exclusive price does not include tax, so tax is added. A tax-inclusive price already contains tax, so the net and tax portions must be extracted.

How is tax removed from an inclusive price?

For a combined rate r, the net amount is gross divided by 1 plus r, and tax is gross minus net. For example, 20% VAT is one-sixth of a VAT-inclusive total.

Does quantity multiply the entered amount?

Yes. The amount is treated as a per-item value and multiplied by quantity before the percentage discount is applied.

Is the discount calculated before tax?

Yes. The percentage discount reduces the entered item amount before tax is calculated or extracted.

Can shipping be taxable?

Yes. Enter shipping and select whether it follows the selected tax rate. When tax is removed, taxable shipping follows the same inclusive basis as the item amount.

How does the India GST split work?

For intra-state presentation, the selected GST rate is divided equally into CGST and SGST. For interstate presentation, the full selected rate is shown as IGST. The tool does not determine place of supply.

Does the India preset include compensation cess?

No. Cess and special product rates are not calculated automatically. Add a custom rate only after confirming the correct legal treatment.

How does the British Columbia preset work?

The combined preset shows 5% GST and 7% PST on the same taxable base. Because the two systems can have different exemptions, confirm that both apply before using the combined result.

How does the Quebec preset work?

The combined preset uses 5% GST and 9.975% QST, producing 14.975% when both apply to the same taxable amount.

What Nova Scotia HST rate is included?

The preset uses 14%, effective from 1 April 2025. Historical transactions may require a different rate and transition rules.

Does the U.S. calculator include local sales tax automatically?

No. The state profiles provide a state or statewide base reference. Enter the verified local or district rate manually because combined rates depend on location and sourcing rules.

What California rate is preset?

The preset starts at the 7.25% statewide rate. Applicable district taxes must be added manually using the current address-specific official rate.

What Texas rate is preset?

The preset starts at the 6.25% state rate. Local jurisdictions can add up to 2%, for a maximum combined rate of 8.25%.

What New York rate is preset?

The preset starts at the 4% state rate. City, county, school-district and possible MCTD rates must be added based on the applicable jurisdiction.

What Illinois rate is preset?

The profile includes 6.25% for general merchandise and 1% for qualifying food, drugs and medical appliances, before applicable local taxes.

Can I calculate zero-rated transactions?

Yes. Select a 0% option or enter a custom rate of zero. Zero-rated and exempt transactions can have different reporting and input-credit consequences, which this tool does not determine.

What rounding options are available?

You can choose standard rounding, round up or round down and select zero to four decimal places. Invoice mode rounds each line and then totals the rounded lines.

Why can component taxes differ by a cent from a manual calculation?

Rounding each component or invoice line can create small differences. The calculator adjusts the final displayed component so the rounded components equal the rounded total tax.

Can I calculate multiple invoice items?

Yes. Add up to 30 tax-exclusive line items with descriptions, quantities, prices, discounts and taxable status. All rows use the currently selected profile and rate.

Can I download the results?

Yes. Download the transaction report as TXT and the invoice line-item schedule as CSV. Download names begin with correctioncopy.com_.

Can I print or save the result as PDF?

Yes. Use Print Result and select a PDF destination in the browser print dialog when supported.

Are my amounts sent to a server?

No page-specific request sends the entered amounts or invoice details. Calculations and exports run in the browser.

Does the tool store my financial data?

No tool-specific account, database or persistent browser storage is used. Values remain in the current page session unless the browser itself restores form state.

Does this calculator prepare tax returns or invoices?

No. It creates arithmetic summaries and a line-item CSV, not a legally compliant tax invoice, return, filing or accounting record.

Can I use this calculator on a phone?

Yes. Controls stack on small screens, tables can be scrolled horizontally when necessary and primary actions remain touch-friendly.

What should I do when a transaction spans multiple tax jurisdictions?

Confirm the applicable place-of-supply or sourcing rules with the relevant authority or a qualified adviser, then enter the verified combined rate or components.
