Yes. PNG stays PNG, JPG or JPEG stays JPEG, and WebP stays WebP. The compressor does not silently convert a PNG to WebP or a JPEG to another format just to produce a smaller number. GIF and BMP are also not silently converted; when safe same-format recompression is unavailable in the browser, the original file is preserved.

Light, Recommended, Strong and Custom show an approximate expected batch size after you upload images. The estimate uses the source format, current dimensions, original file size and the selected quality or dimension limit. It is intentionally shown as an estimate because image detail, noise, transparency and existing compression can change the final KB or MB size.

Recommended is the best starting point for most photos, scans and screenshots. Light keeps the highest visible fidelity, Strong searches harder for a smaller same-format result, and Custom lets you control encoding quality and maximum long-edge dimensions directly.

You can often reduce image file size without an obvious visible quality change, especially with Light or Recommended. However, JPEG and WebP are lossy formats and PNG colour quantization can also change pixel values. The tool uses a detail guard and keeps the original when a same-size re-encode would not help, but no lossy compressor can promise mathematically zero information loss.

JPG and JPEG files stay JPEG. The engine tests several JPEG quality candidates in the selected compression level, compares visual detail against the decoded source and selects the smallest candidate that passes the quality guard. If a same-dimension re-encode is not smaller, the original can be retained.

PNG stays PNG. Instead of converting it to WebP, the engine can reduce colour entropy with controlled quantization, preserve transparency, optionally reduce dimensions according to the selected level and then re-encode the result as PNG. This can work particularly well on scans, screenshots and PNG files containing unnecessary colour variation.

WebP files remain WebP. The compressor tests multiple quality candidates within the selected preset, checks visual detail and returns the smallest acceptable same-format result. Transparent WebP images keep their transparency.

No artificial local-processing limit is imposed. Practical capacity depends on browser memory, image dimensions, device performance and batch size. If a very large batch exhausts available memory, compress it in smaller groups.

The source may already be efficiently compressed, or the selected quality level may be intentionally conservative. Same-format compression also avoids the artificially large savings that can come from converting to a different format. Try Strong or a smaller Custom maximum dimension when a lower file size matters more.
