AES (128/192/256-bit) is modern, strong encryption supported by current 7-Zip, WinRAR, and Windows/macOS tools. Legacy ZipCrypto is much weaker and can be cracked, but some very old software can only read ZipCrypto-encrypted zips, so it's kept as a compatibility option.

Zips encrypted with AES (the default here) open correctly in current versions of 7-Zip, WinRAR, macOS Archive Utility, and most modern unzip tools. Windows' own built-in "Extract All" does not support AES-encrypted zips, so recipients on plain Windows Explorer may need 7-Zip or WinRAR installed to open it.
