How to remove metadata from documents

  1. Choose Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF or image files. Add more files whenever needed.
  2. Review the detected metadata properties beneath each uploaded file. For riskier documents, confirm the cleanup warning shown by the Clean selected button.
  3. Select the categories you want cleared, such as author names, dates, descriptive information, organisation properties or EXIF location details.
  4. Optionally expand Add your own metadata to stage fields for compatible formats. Choose Clean selected (or Clean & apply metadata), inspect the verified before-and-after report, and download the single cleaned file or a ZIP of multiple results.
  5. Before sending a sensitive document, open it in its original application and inspect visible content, comments, revisions, embedded files and hidden material.

A file metadata cleaner for everyday sharing

Documents and photos can include metadata added by word processors, cameras, editing tools and collaboration software. A DOCX document may show the author or last editor; an XLSX spreadsheet may include company properties; a photograph can include EXIF location and camera information. This metadata viewer and remover focuses on selected file properties rather than modifying visible page text or photo pixels. After removal it re-inspects the output; compatible formats also support adding or replacing explicitly chosen fields, without changing the original file.

For Office documents, the tool edits supported XML properties inside the package. For JPEG, PNG and GIF, it removes selected metadata segments or blocks without recompressing image pixels. For WebP, it removes EXIF and XMP chunks while preserving image frames. For PDFs, it edits basic document-information fields and can remove document-level XMP references, but this does not constitute secure PDF redaction.

Remove or update author, EXIF and file properties

Word DOCX and Office files: inspect and remove author names, the last editor, document titles, revision dates, templates and custom properties from supported Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. You can add a deliberate new title, author or project-specific custom field when sharing a cleaned copy.

PDF document properties: remove basic PDF author, creator, title, subject, producer and date properties when the PDF can be read. You may write supported PDF information fields afterward, but this is not secure PDF redaction and does not erase hidden content.

Photo EXIF and image metadata: strip supported camera/location metadata from JPG/JPEG images, remove descriptive PNG text chunks, or clear supported GIF comments and WebP EXIF/XMP. Supported PNG text fields and JPEG/GIF comments can be added again intentionally without recompressing the original image pixels.

Supported formats and important limitations

Recognised editable formats include modern Microsoft Office Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), their macro-enabled counterparts (.docm, .xlsm, .pptm), PDF, JPEG/JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP and OpenDocument .odt, .ods and .odp. File contents are checked for the expected format; renaming an unsupported file does not make it editable. Legacy .doc, .xls, .ppt, TIFF, HEIC, encrypted archives and unknown binary formats are not cleaned; files that cannot be processed receive an error rather than an unchanged download claimed to be private.

Only the selected supported metadata categories are edited. Proprietary metadata, revision history, images embedded within documents, comments, hidden worksheets, off-slide objects, track changes, macros, annotations or visible personal information may remain. Changing signed documents can invalidate digital signatures. For high-risk disclosures, use the built-in Office Document Inspector or a dedicated PDF redaction workflow and verify the output in its native viewer.

Security, privacy and quality checks

Supported file processing happens on your device in the browser; this tool does not submit file contents to a CorrectionCopy file-processing endpoint. Microsoft Office and OpenDocument files are handled as compressed packages and are screened for malformed structures and excessive expansion. The tool does not persist documents in local storage or save private file content to Favorites. Changing any signed document may invalidate its signature, and editing an Office container may affect unsupported vendor extensions.

Image pixel data is preserved by the JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP metadata stripping routines; no photo resize, crop or image recompression is performed. PDF metadata cleaning may rewrite the PDF container and is not a guarantee that unreachable historical objects have been securely erased. After download, inspect the document again and open it to confirm readability and acceptable metadata.

Troubleshooting metadata removal

Frequently asked questions

Which files can this metadata remover clean?

It supports DOCX, XLSX and PPTX Office files, their macro-enabled DOCM/XLSM/PPTM variants, PDF documents, JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and ODT/ODS/ODP metadata. It detects file signatures. Older binary DOC, XLS and PPT and other formats are not safely modified.

Does this remove every hidden detail or sensitive word?

No. This is a metadata cleaner, not a redaction tool. Text in pages/cells/slides, comments, tracked revisions, hidden sheets, embedded files and some private or proprietary metadata can remain. Review the warnings and use the application’s document inspector before sharing sensitive material.

Can I remove only author names or creation dates?

Yes. Select only the metadata categories to clear. Supported properties are edited in the selected file format. Some formats cannot physically erase every date or historical structure; such limitations are reported.

Are my files uploaded to the website?

Cleaning is performed in your browser. The tool does not upload your selected file data to a CorrectionCopy processing endpoint. For PDFs, an external script may be loaded to perform local editing, but the PDF itself is not sent to the script provider by the tool. Existing site services still apply.

Will Word, Excel and PowerPoint still open afterward?

The cleaner edits document-property XML inside the Office package and keeps document content and embedded files intact. File signatures and protected documents may not survive repackaging or may refuse editing. Open and check the new file before sharing it.

Will cleaning invalidate digital signatures?

Yes, changes to signed PDFs, signed Office files and other signed formats may invalidate signatures. Do not clean a signed document if you must preserve its signature validity.

Why can a PDF still contain private information?

PDFs may store XMP, annotations, form fields, embedded files and incremental history beyond basic document information fields. Cleaning visible document properties is not secure redaction or proof that previous values cannot be recovered.

Can I process several files at once?

Yes. Add multiple supported files, inspect each, choose cleanup options, download the cleaned file in its original format or export multiple completed results in a ZIP. Unsupported or password-protected files show clear errors.

Can I add my own metadata after cleaning?

Yes. Expand Add custom metadata after uploading files, create one or more fields, then select Clean & apply changes. Office files, PDF, PNG, JPEG comments and GIF comments support appropriate fields. WebP does not support adding fields in this version. Re-inspection shows what was written.

How can I confirm that metadata was removed?

Each file shows detected properties on upload. After cleanup the tool re-inspects the exported bytes and lists metadata still present. A blank supported-properties list means no supported properties were found; it does not prove all hidden data is gone.
