How to generate an EPC SEPA QR code
- Enter the beneficiary name exactly as it should appear on the bank transfer.
- Enter the IBAN. The tool removes harmless spacing for encoding and validates the mathematical check digits.
- Optionally provide the euro amount and invoice message. Expand advanced fields for a BIC, purpose code, structured creditor reference or extra note.
- Choose Generate QR. Inspect the readable payment details beside the symbol.
- Download PNG or SVG for an invoice, save a text copy of the EPC data, or print the QR alongside the bank details. Ask the payer to verify everything in their bank app.
What this SEPA QR maker does
The tool generates a QR code containing payment instructions for a SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT). It is designed for invoices, payment letters and other situations where the recipient's bank details are also visible in plain text. A supporting bank app may read the code and pre-fill the payment form; it is not a payment gateway or checkout terminal.
- Bank detail validation: checks IBAN length and checksum, BIC structure, and euro amount format. Checksum success does not confirm the account exists or belongs to the stated beneficiary.
- Accurate EPC payload: outputs format version 002 with UTF-8, the SCT service identification, and fixed-position optional fields. Encoding uses a QR error-correction level M with four-module white margins.
- Useful exports: download lossless PNG, scalable SVG, and plain-text EPC content, or print a page displaying the code and human-readable account information.
- Private preparation: QR creation and downloads occur inside your browser, with no external image API and no account sign-in required for generation.
EPC QR format: IBAN, BIC, EUR and remittance
The format follows European Payments Council EPC069-12, version 3.1 (19 March 2024). The line-separated fields are included in a fixed sequence; empty intermediate entries remain empty. Blank trailing entries are omitted without a final line separator.
| Element | Accepted data | Important rule |
|---|---|---|
| Service / version / encoding | BCD / 002 / 1 / SCT | Required format constants; character set 1 is UTF-8 |
| BIC | 8 or 11 letters/digits | Conditional; needed for participating banks outside the EEA |
| Beneficiary name | 1–70 characters | Required |
| IBAN | Country-specific IBAN, up to 34 characters | Required; mathematically checked |
| Amount | EUR0.01–EUR999999999.99 | Optional; euros only |
| Purpose | Four-character purpose code | Optional; use a valid external purpose code |
| Structured reference | Up to 35 characters | Optional; mutually exclusive with free-text remittance |
| Unstructured message | Up to 140 characters | Optional; mutually exclusive with structured reference |
| Beneficiary information | Up to 70 characters | Optional; extra information shown to the payer |
The EPC guidelines limit the payload to 331 bytes and QR symbols to version 13 with error-correction level M. Unicode characters may occupy more than one byte. An entry within individual field limits may still need shortening if the combined QR reaches its encoding capacity.
When to use SEPA bank transfer QR codes
Invoice payments: a freelancer, contractor or supplier can place the QR next to the beneficiary name, IBAN, euro total and invoice reference. The payer can compare the visible information with what the bank app reads.
Recurring bank transfers: a membership organisation can leave the amount blank if members need to enter their own contribution. The payer still authorises each transfer.
Business remittance matching: a creditor reference beginning with RF can identify a payment against a documented reference. The structured and free-text fields must not both be filled.
For point-of-interaction transactions where customers only see a QR at a checkout, the EPC directs implementers toward its separate mobile-initiated SEPA payment QR standardisation work; an invoice-style EPC QR is not universally suitable for that use case.
Bank compatibility, payment security and privacy
The tool validates formatting, not bank ownership. It cannot confirm that a named beneficiary matches the IBAN, that an account is active, or that the receiving bank supports EPC QR scanning. Some banks support only their own national QR standard. Always test with your intended bank app and confirm the amount, name, IBAN and reference before authorising a real payment.
Nothing is charged or transferred by this website. Generated images encode the recipient's payment details directly and are readable by anyone who receives the code; avoid posting private account details publicly. The page does not use a third-party QR generation service or store payment entries in local storage. The website's usual hosting, access logs and shared services remain outside this form's local calculation.
For QR printing, use solid black modules on white, preserve the quiet zone, avoid stretching the image, and verify scanning after physical printing. SVG preserves the exact barcode matrix when resized; PNG can be exported as an image for common invoice workflows.
Troubleshooting invalid SEPA QR details
- IBAN validation fails: compare every character with a bank statement. A mathematical check digit is not a guarantee of account ownership.
- Recipient is too long: use the bank-registered account name within 70 characters; avoid unnecessary descriptions in the name field.
- Invalid or missing BIC: enter the beneficiary bank's correct BIC when required, particularly for non-EEA participants. Ask your bank if uncertain.
- Amount rejected: use euros, a positive amount, and no more than two decimal places. Leave the field blank when the payer should choose the amount.
- QR capacity exceeded: shorten optional notes or remove unnecessary additional information. Do not abbreviate the IBAN or bank name incorrectly.
- QR ignored by a camera app: try the payment scanner built into the actual banking app; a generic camera often interprets the image only as text.
Frequently asked questions
What is a SEPA payment QR code?
It is a QR image containing structured payment details for a SEPA Credit Transfer. A compatible banking app can scan it to fill in a transfer form. The payer still checks and authorises the payment.
Does scanning the code send money automatically?
No. This page neither connects to a bank nor starts a transfer. The payer must use a supported banking app, verify the recipient and amount, and approve the payment themselves.
Which QR format is generated?
The tool uses the European Payments Council EPC069-12 version 3.1 data-capture guidelines: BCD, format 002, UTF-8 character set 1, SCT, QR error correction level M and a QR symbol no larger than version 13.
Is the BIC or SWIFT code required?
The EPC format 002 allows BIC to be omitted in many cases, but the EPC states BIC remains mandatory for SCT transactions involving scheme participants from non-EEA countries. The tool flags missing BIC using the IBAN country as a practical indicator; verify requirements with the receiving bank.
Can I leave the amount empty or use a different currency?
You may omit the amount so the payer enters it. A fixed amount must be denominated in euros and between €0.01 and €999,999,999.99. This tool does not convert currencies.
Can I include an invoice number or structured creditor reference?
Yes. Choose a free-text remittance note of up to 140 characters or a structured creditor reference of up to 35 characters. Use only one. The tool checks the checksum when the reference starts with RF.
Why does the code not scan in my banking app?
EPC payment QR support varies by bank and app, and not every camera QR reader recognises bank-transfer data. Use the banking app’s payment QR scanner where available, check the selected bank’s supported format, and try the SVG or larger PNG.
Are bank details uploaded or stored?
The generator builds QR content and exports in your browser without sending form values to a CorrectionCopy processing endpoint. It does not persist payment entries in local storage. Normal website requests and existing site services still apply.
